1,500 People Affected By Airport Project Will Be Resettled In Kinarut

KOTA KINABALU, Dec 6 (Bernama) -- Some 1,500 people from Kampung Sri Tanjung in Putatan will be resettled at Kinarut to make way for the Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA) extension project, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Joseph Pairin Kitingan said.

Pairin, who is chairman of the Sri Tanjung Squatters Selection Committee, said they were among the 3,000 people from 600 families affected by the extension project.

"The process will be completed after one or two more meetings. Those who are selected will be resettled in Kinarut when 585 units of houses there are ready by Feb next year," he said.

The state government will decide what to do with the remaining 50 per cent of the affected people at a later date, he said.

Pairin, who is also Rural Development Minister, added that the resettlement scheme in Kinarut would be managed by the state Housing and Urbanisation Planning Council (LPPB).

A total of 456 houses in Sri Tanjung will be pulled down to make way for the airport project.
