RANAU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) fully
supports the implementation of the Ninth Malaysia Plan (9MP)
and stands behind the national leadership.
President Datuk
Joseph Pairin Kitingan said this was as an extension of
the party's basic struggle for the state's security, justice,
equal opportunity and transparent people's development programmes.
He said Prime
Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in the 9MP had
clearly stated the fight for equal development for the people
apart from improving the condition for the benefit of all.
"When PBS
was formed, the aspiration of the people in Sabah was to
ensure that the State Government prioritise the curbing
of illegal immigrants influx, equal development and transparency
in improving the people's living condition," he said.
Speaking to launch
the party's 21st anniversary celebration at Ranau parliamentary
level comprising of Kundasang, Karanaan and Paginatan, here,
he said the action plan in the 9MP was in line with the
PBS original objective and the people's aspiration then.
PBS was registered
as a political party on March 5, 1985 and won the State
election on April 22, 1985 to form the Government until
1994 when it had to hand over to the Barisan Nasional (BN)
led by Umno after losing majority in the State Assembly.
PBS left the
BN coalition in 1991 just before the General Election and
aligned itself with the opposition Gagasan Rakyat led by
Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
The party returned
to the political mainstream when it was accepted back into
the coalition in Jan 23, 2002.
Towards this
end, Pairin who is Deputy Chief Minister cum Rural Development
Minister urged party members and supporters to continue
to grasp the original formation objectives of PBS, which
had to overcome various challenges, difficulties and pressures
for the sake of the people.
Also on hand
were PBS Kundasang chief, Dr Joachim Gunsalam, Paginatan
chief, Dr Othman Menudin and Karanaan chief Danis Buik.
