KOTA KINABALU: A total 2,443 18- year-olds
from Sabah have been called up for the National Service
(NS) Training Programme starting Monday.
Sabah NS Training
Council member Henrynus Amin said 2,000 of them would be
placed in six camps in Sabah while the rest would go to
camps in the peninsula and Sarawak.
Three of the
six camps in Sabah are new, he said when contacted here
Sunday.
The new camps
are Sinar Jaya Camp in Kota Belud, Di Bawah Bayu KK Camp
in Tuaran and Bagai Budi Resort Camp in Sandakan. The other
three are Tanaki Camp in Tambunan, Ovai Camp in Papar and
Sansui Camp in Tawau.
This time all
modules spanning over three months will be carried out at
the training camps unlike the previous training session
when trainees spent only one month in the camps followed
by a two-month stint at the campuses of higher learning
institutes.
The old camps
have been upgraded and trainees will stay in barracks and
not tents as previously.
To ensure that
all those selected to undergo the training were contacted,
Henrynus said the NS Training Council had requested the
cooperation of the Education Department to get their latest
addresses.
Radio Television
Malaysia also broadcast the names of those living in remote
areas, he said.
With the new
approach, the number of those selected but did not know
that they were required to come for training would be minimised,
he said.
