Kota Kinabalu:
Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) Tuesday urged the National Registration
Department (NRD) to exercise greater caution in its registration
drive in Melalap, Tenom, to ensure only locals are registered.
PBS
Secretary-General and Melalap Assemblyman Datuk Radin Malleh
said although he appreciated the move which would enable
locals to obtain birth certificate or identity card, the
NRD should not be over enthusiastic in registering anyone
claiming to have no such documents.
“We
should not overlook the possibility of such exercise being
abused by irresponsible elements,” Radin said in a statement
here.
He
said he had received reports that some foreigners working
in other areas had applied for such documents in Melalap
in the ongoing exercise.
He
said it was unlikely that there were many locals with no
birth certificate or identity card, given that Melalap is
not a very remote area in Sabah.
