KOTA MARUDU: Thousands of people are expected
to converge in this small Sabah northern town Saturday and
Sunday for the annual Festival of Corn 2003 aimed at popularising
corn-planting as a profitable crop and its processed products
as food items.
Bandau Member of Parliament Datuk Dr Maximus
Ongkili said that among activities for the event are exhibition
and sale of agricultural products, sports events, float
contest, music performance and cultural activities.
"A variety of corn-based activities
have been put together for public enjoyment and participation
including a corn-eating contest, beauty pageant, drawing
contest for children and comprehensive display and exhibition
of agricultural products from the districts," he said
in a statement via short messaging system (SMS).
Ongkili, who is the Chief Minister's Science
and Technology Advisor, said that the festival is also to
promote Kota Marudu's touristic assets and agricultural
products to both investors and the public.
Chief Minister Datuk Musa Aman is scheduled
to launch the festival Sunday.
