KOTA
KINABALU: Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) deputy president
Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili has called on members to continue
strengthening the party.
In proposing
three measures to strengthen unity within the party, Dr
Maximus said the members must stress that PBS is a strong
multi-racial party that did not only support one community.
He said while
members must remain united, they must also respect one another
and not to look down upon others.
“We must not
be proud and we must be able to compromise to make our party
stronger,” he said in his winding up speech at end of the
18th party congress at KDCA building here yesterday.
Maximus said
PBS must also strive to increase its membership including
getting professionals to join the party.
He added that
the party was fortunate to have the Prime Minister and Barisan
Nasional chairman Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad to officiate
the congress and Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah
Ahmad Badawi, who opened the congress last year.
“Their presence
in the congress showed that the leaders appreciate the party
and its role in the Barisan Nasional,” he said.
The BN leadership,
he said also reckoned PBS as an asset to the national coalition.
Dr Maximus meanwhile
said this year’s congress was a historical event given that
it was the last time that Dr Mahathir would officiate a
BN party congress before he retired next month.
