Statement
by Hon. Dr. Yee Moh Chai, M.P. for Tanjung Aru (P.156)
in Kota Kinabalu
on 27th July 1998
Datuk Yong Teck Lee’s statement that "Only the BN has a
plan to bring about economic recovery to Sabah with the least pain"
( see press of 26th July 1998) could only be described
as another "100 days promise".
Does
this Government not agree with us that its oblivion to the plight
of the people of Sabah and went ahead to impose such a high levy
through its regularization scheme can only be described as adding
more "lethal pain" to the Sabah economy?
Does
this Government not agree with us that its failure to exercise our
State right in stopping the monopoly of Fomema Sdn Bhd in
medical examination of all the foreign workers can only be described
as adding more pain to the economy of Sabah as well?
Indeed,
if this State Government is serious in sorting out the economic
problem of Sabah that it has created in the first place, it should,
first of all, return to us all the people’s money which it has lost
through the Warisan Harta Sdn Bhd in deals such as the NBT.
Furthermore,
this Government should find ways to indemnify all the investors
of Saham Amanah Sabah. The silence of the Government in the
face of the value of Saham Amanah Sabah falling below the
value of a cup of tea can only be described as adding more pain
to the people.
I appeal
to this Government to be more sensitive to the need and plight of
the people during this period of economic hardship.
I believe
this Government should conduct meaningful dialogue with the people
and take heed of their constructive suggestion if it is serious
in their welfare and economy.
Empty
promises such as the "100 days" and meaningless slogan such
as "Sabah Boleh" can only serve as painful insult to all
the injury we have already suffered too much for too long.
