Statement
by Hon. Dr. Yee Moh Chai, M.P. for Tanjung Aru (P.156)
in Kota Kinabalu
on 20th July 1998
It
is deeply regrettable that the State Government of Sabah has failed
to object to the introduction of Fomema Sdn Bhd into the State of
Sabah during the early stage of discussion.
The
Director of Immigration, En. Abdullah Sani Bin Sulaiman has today
confirmed to me personally that the then Chief Minister of Sabah,
Datuk Yong Teck Lee, has raised no objection at all to the introduction
of Fomema Sdn Bhd into Sabah at the material time.
As
a result, the Immigration Dept in Sabah are now not accepting any
doctors who are not registered with the Fomema Sdn Bhd to perform
any medical examination on foreign workers, even if these doctors
will charge at a lower fee than what has been stipulated by the
Fomema Sdn Bhd.
I find
it most absurd and completely unacceptable to say that whilst the
State Government of Sabah has the right of granting work permits
to the foreigners but it has no say in how this is done and has
no way of enforcing this rights at all.
In
view of the undisputed right of the respective State Governments
of Sabah and Sarawak over the power of granting work permits to
any foreign workers, I am appealing to the said governments to jointly
discuss and to introduce all the necessary mechanisms of safeguarding
the interest of the respective States concerned.
