Statement
by Hon. Dr. Yee Moh Chai, M.P. for Tanjung Aru (P.156)
in Kota Kinabalu
on 24th June 1998
The Chief Minister of Sabah is only insulting the intelligence
of the people by saying that " In Sabah, there is no secrets or
all are open secret that have become topics of discussion in coffee
shop" when talking about the list of privatized projects in Sabah.
Regrettably,
this Government which talks so much about transparency is most noted
for its consistency in refusing to let the people know what it has
done with the assets of the people.
I am
challenging the Chief Minister, Tan Sri Bernard Dompok, to explain
to all the people of Sabah what exactly does he mean by "all
are open secret"?
I am
also challenging the Chief Minister of Sabah to tell us since when
did this Government ever become open in the awarding of privatized
deals as claimed by himself.
In
fact, the only open secret that we have in Sabah now-a-day is that
this Government involves rampantly in deals such as land swapping
and share manipulation without ever disclosing to the people the
full detail at all.
Since
the Chief Minister of Sabah is so confident that the number of privatized
deals are small in number then what is his difficulty in making
known to the people all the detail involved?
Indeed,
if this Government could go to the extend of classifying as "Sulit"
the records of a public meeting in a municipal council, how
can anyone seriously believe that its refusal in making known to
the people on the details of all the privatized projects is nothing
less than a cover up?
This
Government should have no fear in revealing to the people all the
detail involving the privatized projects unless it has got something
to hide.
Since
this Government is only a trustee to the interest and assets of
the people, it should be more accountable to all of us. The Chief
Minister of Sabah is therefore obliged to let the people have the
full facts and figures on all the privatized projects. I challenge
this Government to practice true transparency, not just lip service.
Give us the full detail, now.
