PRESENT 9 POINT MEMORANDUM TO THE ELECTION COMMISSION
KUALA
LUMPUR – Parti Bersatu Sabah presented a 9 point memorandum
to the Election Commission at its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur Monday.
Led by its President, Datuk Seri Panglima Joseph Pairin Kitingan,
the eight member PBS delegation held a two hour discussion with
Chairman of the Election Commission, Datuk Harun Din and other top
officials of the Election Commission.
Among
other things, the memorandum raised the weaknesses of the existing
voter registration exercise especially at the public enquiry and
appeal levels. The memorandum also highlighted the presence of phantom
voters in the electoral roll including the problem of rampant duplicated
identity cards detected by Parti Bersatu Sabah in the 1997 electoral
roll. Other issues raised were the illegal transfer of voters through
dubious means and also the irregularities and questionable practice
of postal voting in Sabah.
Datuk
Pairin stressed that there ought to be strong public confidence
in the electoral process especially the electoral roll for the election
commission to effectively carry out its duty for the sake of democracy.
"PBS
is merely trying to assist the Election Commission by pointing out
weaknesses in the electoral process and by presenting its views
to remedy the situation," he said.
Datuk
Pairin also thank Datuk Harun Din for agreeing to meet the PBS delegation
and expressed hope that PBS views will be considered by the Election
Commission.
Meanwhile,
Datuk Harun Din promised to look into the various grieavances by
PBS and said that he will reply in due course.
The
PBS delegation included its three Deputy Presidents, Dr Maximus
J Ongkili, Haji Abdul Malek Chua, Datuk Wong Phin Chung. Also present
were Radin Malleh, Henrynus Amin, Dr Yee Moh Chai and Yunof Maringking.
