Five More Companies To Use Jaring's Onegrid Computing Service

KUALA LUMPUR, April 12 (Bernama) -- The first Internet service provider in the country, Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd, is optimistic five more companies will use its OneGrid, a high-performance computing (HPC) service, this year.

The company's clients at present are Motorola Technology Sdn Bhd and Azimation Werks Sdn Bhd, a multi-media design company.

Its Chief Executive Officer, Dr Mohamed Awang Lah, said Jaring would continue to aim companies which required highly intensive computing resources such as animation, analysis and information technology security.

"The OneGrid offers rendering services particularly beneficial for targeted industries with high demand for processing animation, modelling and simulation," he said at the launch of the new service here Monday by Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation Datuk Dr Maximus Johnity Ongkili.

With OneGrid, programmes and applications, previously hindered by computing power that may take days, weeks or longer to process, may now be completed within hours.

Jaring secured the grid computing licence from MIMOS Bhd on July 22 last year to increase the country competitiveness in technology advancement regionally and globally.

Earlier, Ongkili said the use of grid computing in the animation industry would help to excite human lives with new innovations and creations as it bolstered excellent creativity among users.

"One such initiative can be started off through collaboration with relevant Malaysian agencies in the animation industry and productions houses.

"The agencies can benefit from rendering services hosted on grid computing infrastructure," he said.

In conjunction with the launch, Jaring also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) today with Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris to jointly develop HPC infrastructure for education, research and university administration purposes.

Six other universities have also confirmed their participation.

In addition to the universities, MoUs were also signed with KPerak Implementation and Coordination Corporation, Perak E-Organisation Sdn Bhd and Sabah's Ministry of Resource Development and IT to develop data centers.
