CHICAGO, May 5 (Bernama) -- The Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry has prepared a paper on the proposed National Innovation Centre, also known as MyNIC, to be tabled in the Cabinet end of this month, said Minister Datuk Seri Dr Maximus Ongkili.
He said his ministry has been tasked to undertake a comprehensive study on the implementation of MyNIC.
The MyNIC, among others, will focus on marketing research outputs to create wealth as the government recognised commercialisation of research outputs was still low in the country.
Commercialisation level in Malaysia was five per cent over the past five years and the government was aiming to double it during the 10th Malaysia Plan period, he told Malaysian journalists covering the BIO International Convention in Chicago (BIO Chicago 2010) after opening the Malaysian Pavilion at Chicago's McCommick Place on Tuesday.
Dr Maximus said commercialising research outputs was not an easy process as it requires ecosystem, entrepreneur training and funding, among others.
Asked on capital injection into MyNIC, Dr Maximus said the government has not decided yet and it would depend on how the government looked at it.
On another note, the minister said biotechnology activities were on track to contribute 2.5 per cent to the country's gross domestic product by year-end.
"Yes, we are (on track). Last year itself, we were already at 2.2 per cent," he added.
