KOTA
KINABALU: The latest downward revision in the parking
fees imposed in the city was a clear testimony that the
present Chief Minister is concerned and cares about the
people’s predicaments, said Api-Api Assemblyman Dr Yee Moh
Chai yesterday.
“It is very comforting
to know that our Chief Minister, Datuk Seri Musa Aman cares
about the issues that affect the people, in particular the
unacceptable parking rates in the city of Kota Kinabalu,
that has been inflicting untold misery to the thousands
of motorists over the last two years.
“The decision
of the Chief Minister showed that he has taken heed of the
thousands of petitioners who had in the past submitted their
views and appeals to the government.
“And I’m indeed
grateful to the Chief Minister in listening to the people’s
plights, by making all the necessary adjustments to put
the interests of the people in the top priority,” he said.
Dr Yee who is
also the Tanjung Aru MP was especially appreciative of Musa
for taking the initiative to set up a Review Committee to
take in all the relevant inputs to come out with a rate
that is acceptable to most people.
While noting
that no policy would ever meet with 100 per cent support
from all parties concerned, he nevertheless regarded the
latest revision as an acceptable one.
The major changes
made to the parking rates include the abolition of parking
fees collection in Menggatal and Telipok; the reduction
in the season parking rates from RM80 to RM50, and from
RM50 to RM30, and also the increase in the number of parking
lots for long-term parking.
Dr Yee who is
also the deputy president of Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) stressed
that ultimately the City Hall should seriously look into
increasing the number of parking lots in the city, as well
as improving its public transport system to effectively
resolve the traffic congestion in the city.
“I’m sure many
motorists would choose to use the public transport system
if the system is reliable and efficient,” he said.
He also pledged
that he and his colleagues in PBS would continue to monitor
the parking situation in the city and continue to convey
the aspiration and need of the people to the government.
