Unity Advisory Council Reactivated

KUALA LUMPUR: The National Unity Advisory
Council under the purview of the Prime Minister's Department
has been reactivated to deal with issues pertaining to national
unity problems in government efforts to promote national
integration.
Minister in the
Prime Minister's Department Datuk Dr Maximus Ongkili said
he would chair the council and discuss problems related
to unity, determine solutions and strategies to tackle the
problems and which would be used as reference by the ministry.
The appointment
of the 53 council members had been approved by Prime Minister
Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi and its inaugural meeting
would be held in September, he said when replying to Tan
Sri Dr Ting Chew Peh (BN-Gopeng), and elaborating on the
matter later at a media conference at the Parliament lobby
here Tuesday.
Ongkili said
five committees had been established, among which were to
discuss the National Service (NS) programme and the effectiveness
of the Neighbourhood Watch (Rukun Tetangga).
He said among
the committee members were the Ministry's Chief Secretary,
State Secretaries, intellectuals, politicians, former government
officers, voluntary bodies, and those representing students,
youths and women.
