Press Statement
by Hon. Dr. Yee Moh Chai, M.P. for Tanjung Aru (P.156)
in Kota Kinabalu
on 4th February 1998

It is highly regrettable that Datuk Wences Angang, the Assistant Minister to the Local Government and Housing, should publicly demonstrate his ignorance over the change of his own Sabah State Government’s gaming policy regarding the slot machines.

I suggest that Datuk Wences should check with his Permanent Secretary before he makes further statements regarding the slot machines which could be construed as misleading.

The Chief Minister of Sabah, Datuk Yong Teck Lee, who has stated that the State Government consistently stood firm in its policy on public gaming ( re: his 1998 New Year message ) is obliged to tell us the considerations he has taken into account in allowing his Government to have 30 more, in addition to the earlier 20, establishments to operate slot machines after an earlier announcement that 39 establishments in Sabah would not be allowed to operate slot machines from 1st January, 1998.

Datuk Yong Teck Lee, being the Chief Minister of Sabah, is also obliged to tell us the considerations he has taken into account, given his stated gaming policy, in allowing his Government not objecting to the transfer of all the slot machines from 9 establishments, which were supposed to cease operations, to be used in others.

Since the State Government of Sabah has, in effect, allowed these establishments to operate their slot machines in the end, the Chief Minister of Sabah, therefore, has a duty to tell us the true motives of his Government in announcing publicly that these establishments concerned would not be allowed to operate slot machines in the first instance.
